If you are happy with your current email client software then there is not necessarily any reason to change it. But there are some security issues to be aware of. Some email programs work by simply using the Windows internet libraries in your operating system. No problem in that, but you will inherit any security weaknesses that it may contain.
If you want secure email (no viruses, malware, phishing etc) then its worth looking for software that is self contained. While there are several available, there is one that stands out, in our opinion, because it has concentrated on security aspects since day one... Pegasus. Among the excellent security handlings, it includes blocking all scripting so avoiding viruses that way, plus not displaying pictures unless you specifically ask it to (jpeg images can contain viruses). It also has excellent spam handling using a scoring system rather than blunt phrase blocking. We tested this by disguising a common spam word (the dreaded 'V****a' word using all the tricks that spammers use. Pegasus found it every time. Be aware though that the author of Pegasus recently had second thoughts about continuing support and development. But due to public demand he later announced he had changed his mind. Check out the website first to see what is currently happening. Foxmail. This client is mentioned because it has been a very popular alternative to OE. It does work very well, and has the extra benefit of a remote email manager - this can be very handy to scan the subjects of emails before downloading them. You can then, if needed, delete any spam directly on the server. Sometimes emails can jam during download. The remote manager has proved invaluable in freeing them up by deleting the 'sticky' item remotely. The above review refers to Foxmail version 5 (version 6 has been released but is no longer in English). Poppy. On a lighter note, we do recommend this small utility for automatically checking your emails. It is lightweight yet can scan multiple accounts and has an excellent system for marking email sources as 'friends' so you can easily delete spam with a single click without having to download them. Once the undesirable emails are removed, another click can open your email client to pull down the remaining 'friendly' ones.
