System Utilities
Although there are probably thousands of good system utilities available, all of which we could never possibly cover, we thought it best to start with one particular area that everyone should care for...
Defragmenting...

The standard defrag system utility in Windows does a fair job of defragmenting your hard drive.  But how many times have you noticed it doesn't always handle all the fragments?  It cannot defrag files that are locked in some way, or are in use, and often these are parts of the Windows system itself.  You can reach a point where some parts of the drive never defrag unless you take special action.  Another problem is that the defragger is quite a simple one, and only handles files that are seriously fragmented.  Smaller ones are not only left unhandled but don't even appear in the analysis.  This could be an advantage by making it a bit faster in its mammoth task, but it is wise to do a very thorough defrag regularly, using an extra program.

What follows is a procedure we use in order to not only do a proper defrag, but help stop fragmentation from occurring.

The program used are...

Windows Defrag (the one you already have)

O&O Defrag

Buzzsaw

The reason for needing three programs will be explained fully as we go, but basically O&O Defrag is more thorough than Win Defrag, and Buzzsaw is an 'on the fly' defragger you have running all the time.

To get the best results, handle everything in this order:

1.  Install Buzzsaw, but do NOT run it. If it automatically starts running after installation, shut it down or it might cut across the rest of this procedure.

2.  Install O&O Defrag, but DO NOT say yes when it asks you if you want it to replace the Windows Defragger (you will need both).

3.  Reboot your pc in safe mode.
